Pick a place to stay
The Hoosier’s Hidden Hikes book features 25 hand-picked hiking locations; even the most dedicated weekend warrior will spend a year or two before visiting them all. With so much to do in the Hoosier National Forest, you may want to stay a while.
Crawford County Cabins
This area is close proximity to Hemlock Cliffs, Yellow Birch Ravine, Mitchel Creek, Birdseye Trail, and Carnes Mill. This area has many of the best waterfalls in the state of Indiana. Other attractions include the Little Blue River, Patoka Lake, Marengo Cave, and Cave Country Canoes. You could take a week long vacation here and see a quarter of it if you try real hard.
Perry County Cabins
Perry County features the bulk of Hoosier’s Hidden Hikes locations. Here you will find the best off-trail hiking opportunities in the Hoosier National Forest Special Areas, such as Oil Creek, Smith Hollow, Bear Hollow, Peter Cave Hollow, Saalman Hollow, Dauby Hollow, Potts Creek, Deer Creek, and Stinking Fork Creek. This is where you will discover many of the hidden waterfalls, bluffs, rock shelters, and arches that remain secluded in the backwoods. Other hiking areas include miles of trails at Mogan Ridge, Oriole Trail, German Ridge, and Indian Lake. The town of Derby Indiana is particularly charming, and there is a great place in town to swim and paddle at Rainbow Lake, which is also featured in the guidebook.
